Artist Statement.

As I'm hard at work on my official website, I wanted to somewhat re-launch my blog. This site is going to be my virtual sketchbook. A place to keep thoughts and whatever catches my eye. It will also be updated with samples of personal work, some finished, some not. I really appreciate your visit and am always open to dialogue.

As a student of fine art you are at one point in your college career asked to write your official artist statement. This daunting task was appointed to me a few weeks ago. Thanks to Professor Just, I sat down for an entire afternoon, her lecture on repeat on my ipod, and thought about...me. What is my artistic point of view? where does it come from? where is it going? why do I do what I do? and of course the most important question in my mind was- who cares what I have to think or say about myself? doesn't 'art' really speak for itself. does the context of my creations change when I start throwing in bullshit adjectives and irrelevant bits of personal history.

I guess we can contribute this to the 21st century theory of 'personal branding.'

Anyways, back to my story. I jotted down three paragraphs about myself in my notebook, finishing only moments before it was due. In the back of my mind I knew some of it, maybe most of it, was shit. I know I'm an artist, but what does that even mean in today's day and age? My required information was there, I had the recommend three paragraphs. Even an entire paragraph on how I do my work! Exciting right?

So, its time to present my statement to the class. Still all sloppily written down on a sheet of sketching paper. The professor takes my statement and places it on the document projector for the class to read and the first thing that comes out of someones mouth is... "Wow, I really like how that looks." Every word spoken after that by every other student mine as well of been spoken in Korean. I had found my answer. I have found what is important to me as a designer and artist.

Everything else comes secondary.

So I present to you my official artist statement. I wouldn't even recommend reading it.

thank you C for the suggestion.
